Biography
Bauer ~~ Johan Gottfried and Carolina Rosina sailed from Liverpool, England on the "Montmorency" and arrived in Launceston on the 28th of June 1855. There were 155 German immigrants on the "Montmorency" and 118 from the UK. Only a very small number of these UK and German immigrants paid the full fare. All others came under a Bounty Scheme whereby they were sponsored by persons here in Tasmania. There was a 2 way contract between the sponsor and the families or individuals. The sponsor would provide accommodation and basic foodstuffs and in return the immigrants would work for the sponsor for 2 years. Our BAUER family was sponsored by Adye DOUGLAS, in conjunction with his brother Henry. Adye DOUGLAS was a well known Launceston lawyer and landowner. (He went on to become Premier of Tasmania) and both he and Henry owned land at New Ground, which is an area southeast of Port Sorell, now called Harford. Our BAUER family and several other of the German families started their new lives in that district. The shipping record for the "Montmorency only shows our family as having 5 children and the 2 youngest are recorded with another family, LANG, which was also from Steinheim an der Mur. The family consisted of; Johan Gottfried BAUER born 1805 in Steinheim an der Mur and the children from his marriage to Elizabetha Katherina KALLENBERGER born 1818 in Geisingen, Wuerttemburg who died 1853 in Steinheim an der Mur, Wuerttemburg Margarethe Catherine born 1838 Elizabetha Margaretha born1841 Dorothea Christiana born 1845 Jacob Freidrich born1846 Gottlieb Gottfried born 1848 Johan Gottfried Born 1850 together with his new wife, Carolina Rosina, and her daughter Christiana Carolina, who travelled under the name of Carolina Dorothea. Johan Gottfried and Carolina Rosina had a family of 11 children here in Tasmania. He, in his life time was responsible for 21 children: 9 from his first marriage, Christiana Carolina KLINGER (his step daughter), and the 11 children from his second marriage. Our Godfrey (Gottlied Gottfried) and his full sister Hannah (Dorothea Christiana) both married in Horsham and both showed the identical information on their marriage certificates. Godfrey and Flora were present at Hannah`s marriage to John Tuach McKENZIE in May 1888 at Wonwondah
