WorkCarter BiographyThe name is confusing, here - I have a marriage record that says William Austin (as father of the bride); a census record that says Len W. Austin, and a marriage record of his own, if it's right, that says Lea W. Austin. My guess is that Lea William isthe full name, but it's rather dependent on what's right, and what's a typo. Certainly, it looks like Len is a red herring from a wrongly transcribed census return - the original looks like an A to me.   He is cited as living/staying with his grandfather, Thomas Austin, in the 1881 census - hence we have little information so far on his parents.   27 Feb 2006: new info: =============== After some discussion with my Grandma, it transpires that William was illegitimate, and that he gets the name Austin from his mother, not his father. That rather explains why he spent some or all of his childhood at his grandparents'. The legend has it that his mother was impregnated by the son of the local squire, for whom she was a maid, and that she was banished to Liverpool in disgrace when it was found that she was pregnant.   Birth registered Apr, May, Jun 1867   Distinctly murky use of father's name on marriage certificate - we know he was illegitimate, but he cites his father's name as Richard Austin. Richard is, of course, his stepfather's name, but Richard Taylor.   1894: married from 19 Jefferson Street. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
