Graves County

JAMES AUSTIN was born January 12, 1836, in Graves County. He is a son of

Rev. P. W. Austin and Sallie (Gilbert) Austin. The father was born in

North Carolina; he died September 24, 1872, aged seventy-five. The mother

was born in Dickson County, Tenn.; she died in December, 1883, aged

seventy-five. James was brought up on his father's farm, and taught school

about three and one-half years, after which he carried on farming and

teaching until 1865; he then served as deputy sheriff four years. February

15, 1869, he was appointed to fill the vacancy of county clerk; this

position he held until August 5, 1869. In the fall of 1869 he was appointed

deputy circuit clerk; he held the office till September 1, 1880. In the

following April he became associated with the Mayfield Mill, with which he

has been connected ever since. He was married March 25, 1860, to Miss

Elizabeth Carter, of Graves County. They have had seven children, five of

whom are living, three sons and two daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Austin are

members of the Baptist Church.
