EAST RISDON DROWNING

FATALITY.

THE INQUEST.

An inquest was held on Saturday at Bellerive, before Mr. G. W. Allwnght, Coroner, touching the death of Mr, James Douglas Walters, 73 years of age, of Derwent-park, orchardist, who was drowned on the previous day. Police-Inspector Hughes conducted the inquiry.

The evidence of the deceased's son, Arthur Walters, East Risdon, orchard ist, was that he took the deceased to his (witness's) home on Christmas night. He was then much run down in health, and was worrying a lot about a son who went to the war. On Christ- mas morning, Herbert Walters, an- other son, took him for a motor-carride, when he complained of his heart. Deceased had a restless night, and wit-ness had a look at him repeatedly, and saw him in bed about 5 o'clock on Friday morning, and then slept until 6.20 a.m., when he awoke, and found his father gone out. As he did not return after a short while, witness looked for him about the place, with- out success. Extending his search fur- ther, he found the body about 7 a.m. in the water near the jetty, about 6 feet from the shore, his hat being on the rocks under the jetty. With the assistance of two neighbours, the body was got out of tho water, and carried to Cleburne's. Witness believed his father took his hat off, went to bathe his head in the water, tripped on the rocks, and fell in. He was liable tobecome dazed, and, having a weak heart, failed to get ashore, as he had a bruise on his face, as though he had fallen against a rock.

Dr. Arthur Hayward said he exam- ined tho body, and found contusions on the face, as though he had fallen on the rocks, or against one of the piles of the jetty, and, becoming stun- ned, had fallen into the water, and was unable to save himself. He could not have been dead when he fell into the water, or he would not have bledfrom the contusions on his face. He

probably missed his footing, and fell

into tho water.

James Herbert Walters, Risdon-Road, builder, another son, also deposed to the deceased's indifferent health.

Tho Coroner said he had no doubt that the deceased met with his death by drowning, but how he got into the water there was no evidence to show. He entered a verdict accordingly.

DROWNED IN THE DERWENT.

James Douglas Walters, 75 years of age, was drowned in the Derwent yester- day morning near Risdon. About 5 a.m. the deceased's son saw him about the house, but in an hour's time he was missing, and as he was somewhat strange in his manner, the son went to look for him, and shortly afterwards found the body lying in the water under Cleburne's jetty. It was recovered, and an inquest will be held at Bellerive to-day.
