THE PEOPLE'S JOURNAL Oct 3rd 1874
David Bruce, flesher, deserves his meed of praise. Seeing a drunken woman throw a child out of a four-storey window he did not look as with mere gaping amazement, or run to get out of the way, but actually placed himself in the way to "kep" the child as it fell. The violence with which the latter descended brought Bruce to his knees, but he almost completely broke the force of the boy's fall. Bruce is evidently no coward, and but for his presence of mind and pluck the child, if not killed, would in all probability have been injured for life. It is not everyman that would stand firm and hold up his arms to catch a boy between tree and four years of age falling from a four-storey window. Well done, David, say we.

The medal opposite is inscribed with the following words - Presented to Mr David Bruce, Dundee. For courageously saving by catching in his arms a young boy who had been dropped from the top window of a four storey house in Union Close, Nethergate, Dundee on 28th September 1874
