Ian Brookes completed his undergraduate work at King's College, University of London.  After earning a BSc he moved to Canada and gained an MSc and later a PhD at McGill University.  Ian joined the Geography Department at York University, Toronto, Canada in 1965 and continued his teaching and research there until his retirement in 1996.  He taught and completed research on the impact of glaciers during the last ice age on land masses.  His main area of concentration was the geomorphology of Newfoundland.  He also studied the geomorphology of Egypt and Iran and did extensive research on the life of T. E. Lawrence, "Lawrence of Arabia."
