Biography

John Haig emigrated to Australia in 1852. Sailed from Greenock on board the Margaret Poynter along with brothers Willam Colledge & James.

 

Miner at Ballarat.

 

Took up farming pursuits in the Burrumbeet district for about 15 years and then came to Berringa where he took a prominent interest in the district.

Postmaster in 1883 until 1889.

 

Prominent sportsman with many prizes for heavy events at Highland Games. First Prize at Buninyong Highland Games on 4th January 1860.

 

Married janet Campbell and had 10 children

 

Donated land for the Presbyterian Church at Berringa

 

Margaret Poynter, the vessel they emigrated to Australia in was built in 1840 on the Clyde. A 3 masted barque of 271 t Owner J Hay. Arrived Melbourne October 7 1853. Sold, filled with rubble and scuttled to form part of Sandridge Pier, Melbourne in 1854
