Florence never married. At the age of 13, she lost her mother, and was given responsibility for the house and the care of her three siblings. During World War II, she invited a work colleague to stay, after her family circumstances had caused her to move into a run-down bedsit. Mrs Betty Youd continued to live with her in several different places until her death in 1992.
