BiographyCatharine McKelroy "Katy" Shaw was born 4-22-1781 in Wake County, NC and died on 2-5-1860 in Gibson Co., TN., the daughter of John Baptiste & Frances McKelroy Shaw. Katy married 11-19-1795 in Wake Co., NC, Thomas H. Jones, b. 1-2-1852 Wake Co., NC and died 9-26-1852 in Gibson Co., TN. Their children were: 1. Elizabeth Jones, (no issue) (m) 1st Rev. Mitchell   March Tenn 1860 Catharine Jones Will I Catharine Jones of the County of Gibson & State of Tennessee being of sound mind and of disposing memory do make & publish this my last will & testament. 1st - It is my will that immediately after my death my Executors herein after named shall pay all my just debts. 2nd - I give Thos W. Jones in trust for the sole and separate use & benefit of Catharine Lassiter & her children, all the household & kitchen, store room, & dairy furniture, excepting beds & bed steds & the furniture belonging thereto. The ballance of my Estate including beds & furniture that I may own at the time of my death of every kind whatever, I give to the following persons to be equally divided between them to wit: to my son John W. Jones, Willis & Thos W. Jones & to my daughters Rachel Carthel, Frances Hammon, Charity Dickason, Aly Neilson, Priscilla Freeman, her share to be vested in Thomas J. Freeman & William W. Freeman in trust for the sole & separate use of the said Priscilla Freeman her life & after her to go to her children or their heirs. Catharine Lassiter her share to be vested in Thomas W. Jones in Trust for the sole & separate use & benefit of said Catharine Lassiter during her natural life & after her death to be equally divided between her children or their heirs & Ruth Harper for her sole & separate benefit free from the control of her present or any future husband making Eleven of my children, four sons & seven daughters between whom my Estate is to be divided & should any of them die before I do their heirs or children or their heirs to have the shares to which the parent would have been entitled. But since the death of my husband, I have advanced to Catharine Lassiter Two hundred acres of land at $1600.oo; & to John W. Jones three negros, Dave, Susan & Harvey at $975.oo; to Rachel Carthel negro woman Meriah & her three children at $1550.oo; & to Priscilla Freeman negro boy Jessee at $530.oo. Now in as much as the above property has been by me advanced at the above prices to my said children, It is my will that after my deathon a final division of my Estate the advancement be charged to those who received them at the above price & the commissioners who divide the ballance shall take into consideration the above advancement & the time & mode of making them & the prices at which the property was advanced to each one & when the property which I may own at my death shall be valued & divided among my children with reference to the above named Eleven children as near equal in the benefits which they have or may receive in my Estate as may be possible or practicable. If any portion of my Estate should be going to Priscilla Freeman or Catharine Lassiter in money shall be laid out in negroes or land for each of their separate use & benefit or if necessary in same other good property having due respect to the wishes of my said daughters. I further will & direct that my negro woman Margarette who has a husband at Capt Underwood's, at my death be offered to him with two or three of her youngest children at valuation, but should said Underwood not buy said negro woman & children, then she is to be offered to the one of my children who resides nearest & most convenient to the owner of the husband of said negro woman Margarette that will take her & two or three of her youngest children, but if none will take her at valuation, then her & her youngest child shall be sold for what they will bring to same person residing near the owner of her husband. I do not give my daughter Elizabeth Barham or my Grandson James Chrisp or his sister Elizabeth Oliver, formerly Elizabeth Chrisp any thing whatever because my husband Thomas Jones in his life time gave them what he designed them to have from him or me. I further will & direct that my negro man Wiley be let apart to my son Willis Jones if he wants him, if not to be divided as other property. My object in this will is to make my said Eleven children above provided for equal beneficiaries in my Estate, except the furniture given to Catharine Lassiter. She is to have that much more than the others. I hereby appoint my sons John W. Jones, Willis Jones, and Thomas W. Jones my Executors to Execute this my last will & testament & they shall not be required to give any security for the Execution of this will & if one or more declines the other or others shall go on & execute the will without giving security.
