Initially he formed and outstnading half-back/five eighth combination with Australian representative Ned Andrews at club, Newcastle and NSW levels. His career suffered some interruptions due to injury, but were not sufficiently serious to prevent him from representing NSW four times from 1947 to 1950. He played two seasons with Manly Warringah in 1950-51 and represented city seconds against country seconds in 1950.
