Steel Mill Worker
Between Circa 1914 and 1923

After obtaining the transfer from working in the office as a male secretary to work on the steal room floor and working there for a while, Carl was involved in a accident where while he was standing below where someone was moving a steel beam in the air above his head.  Not thinking anything of this everyday occurrence Carl kept working at his job.

Until in 1923 suddenly and without warning the massive steel beam broke free of its restraints catapulting downwards and landing first on top of Carl’s foot slicing the majority of his foot up to his ankle off.  He was in recovery for at least 12 months.  His son Bob told me that for the rest of his life he had phantom pain in the part of his foot that was cut off.

This was the end of his career in the Steel Mill.

Biography

Carl attended male secretarial college in Pittsburgh, PA, believing that with a college education he would be able to earn more money.  After graduation he gained employment as a secretary in the steel mill. Carl soon realized that the workers on the floor of the Steel mill little to no education were earning more wages per hour then he was.  This motivated Carl to put in for a transfer to work as a laborer on the steel room floor.

After obtaining the transfer from working in the office as a male secretary to work on the steal room floor and working there for a while, Carl was involved in a accident where while he was standing below where someone was moving a steel beam in the air above his head.  Not thinking anything of this everyday occurrence Carl kept working at his job.

Suddenly and without warning the massive steel beam broke free of its restraints catapulting downwards and landing first on top of Carl’s foot slicing the majority of his foot up to his ankle off.  He was in recovery for at least 12 months.  His son Bob told me that for the rest of his life he had phantom pain in the part of his foot that was cut off.

This was the end of his career in the Steel Mill.

Carl had moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia with his 2nd wife Bertha.  One day his youngest son Robert received a phone call at his job from Carl's doctor.  The doctor told him, "Your Father has advanced prostrate cancer and he needs to go to the hospital but he says that he won't go unless his boys come and get him and take him to Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Maryland” Bob thanked the doctor and told him that they, he and his brother Chuck would arrive tomorrow to get their father and take him to the hospital.  After hanging up with the doctor Bob then called his brother at work, they both agreed to take off work the next day and arranged a time to meet to make the approximate 4 hour drive to Virginia Beach to get their father return with him to Maryland and check him into the hospital.

Shortly after checking him into the hospital they were informed that the diagnosis was correct and that Carl would receive palliative care only since he had not done anything previously to treat his cancer it was now to late to do anything accept try to make Carl comfortable in his last days.

Carl’s youngest Granddaughter did not really remember him because at this time she would be 2 years old in about a month.

At that time Washington Adventist Hospital had a policy that you had to be at least 12 years old to visit any of their patients.  Shanda's (the almost 2 year old granddaughter) mother was not about to let this Hospital policy stop her daughter from seeing her Grandfather.  After arriving at the hospital she tightly clutched Shanda's hand tightly and walked so quickly with Shanda that she had some difficultly keeping up with her mother.  Shanda will never forget as they walked rapidly down those hospital corridors her mother repeating "No one is going to stop my child from seeing her Grandfather."

Shanda remembers feeling somewhat embarrassed at the spectacle that she felt her mother was causing, imagining that her mother was calling unnecessary attention to them.  However probably due to this "Spectacle" her mother caused, this is the one and only memory Shanda retains of her Grandfather Carl.  She remembers sitting on his lap as he sat on his hospital bed and even what his pajama's looked like.

Approximately 2 weeks after Carl entered the hospital he passed away.

His second wife Bertha never came with him to Maryland or to his funeral.
