Jasmin - Good morning, evening, G'day (delete as appropriate)
I can trace my Sandeman heritage back about 9generations to a John Sandeman, a native of Alyth, Perthshire, who married Margaret Smith in November 1628.
The name “Castle” does not appear in my Genealogy. This is a reasonably thorough list of the decedents from their grandson, David’s second marriage to Margaret Ramsey. They had 12 children. He apparently had four children by his first marriage but the research did not show them or whether he had any siblings, uncles or aunts.
The genealogy that I have was originally written in 1870 and, to my knowledge, last updated in 1950. The copyright is unclear. It is written in a book form and was printed by “George Waterston & Sons Limited,” Edinburgh.
Alyth is a small town near Perth which was once the first bridge crossing of the River Dee. Dundee is the port on the north bank of the Dee Estuary.
I hope that is of some use to you.

Hi Colin,

Thank you for your reply. I will take this information and see if I can get a connection. I do believe I may have confused the issue - The name castle refers to an actual castle building. Further research has led me to believe that the castle is actually "Dun Robin Castle" - Earl of Sutherland linage. The story is one of the earl's daughters ran again with the gardener - you guessed it I'm a descendant of these two........but to date I have not been able to confirm the ancestors of either of these two individuals ; George Sandeman b. 10/11/1798 (son of David Sandeman and Elspeth Forbes b. abt 1754, they m.20/12/1795 or 7/2/1796 at Airlie, Angus & Collace, Perth, Scotland).

The other story is that the above George is a descendant from the Sandeman's of 'The House of Sandeman'. From me limited research results there's a David in the 5th generation of this family that may or may not be the connection. From your reply my research David and the your David and Maragaret's second son David are the same David. This research has been noted from the published book "Sandeman, Two Hundres of Porry and Sherry".

I would be very greatful, if you find information on David, the son, b 1757 (abt) if you would let me know. I would dearly love to put this one to bed one way or the other.

Again thank you and I lookforward to keeping in touch.

Regards
Jasmin

Hi Jasmin
have just been reading your message to Colin re the Sandeman line. I am a Sandeman from Dundee and have a fair bit of info on the Sandeman's connected to the 'House of Sandeman' , even pictures etc of the old family home at Springlands on the banks of the river Tay, it still stands to this day. I too believe I am an ancestor of the Aylth John Sandeman but am still a couple of generations away from proving it. In my research I have learnt a lot about the family of David b 1757. He was David George Sandeman (Davie)1757-1835, he was the one who built the house at Springland on his father George's land. When George died in 1803 Davie inherited the land as well as the house. It was Davie's brother George 1765-1841 who founded the House of Sandeman. If you can possibly lay your hands on a book titled 'Perth Entrepreneurs: the Sandemans of Springland' by Charles D Waterston (another relation) 2008 it has a wealth of knowledge on the whole family, there are also pictures of many of the family including Davie and his father George. They were a very well to do family in Perth and each member did very well in their own right too, travelling all over the world and making their mark there too. I also have a copy of Davie's will, it is very difficult to understand the writting as you can imagine but there are bits that you can make out if you are interested. I have also found Davie's grave in Greyfriars Cemetry in Perth by pure chance. He is buried with his wife and two daughters, a son and grandson. I have pictures of this also. It was very overrun when I first found it but I've managed to cut it back at bit and have been in contact with the council to try to make sure the litter collectors etc pay particular attention to the area. I visit every few months and lay some flowers and tidy up. I still don't have any proof that Davie and co are no more that very distant cousins of mine but I do feel myself rather drawn to him in particular now that I visited his home and grave etc. His uncle was David was once kidnapped by Bonny Prince Charlie and forced to ride South with them. This came about after his father David who was a burgess in Perth had a meeting with the Prince himself to tell him that the other burgess's had taken all the money to Edinburgh so there was nothing left in the pot for his campaigne!!! The Bell Library in Perth sell this book in paperback for about £17, I'm sure they would be happy to mail a copy to you if you give them a call. The library was once the Sandeman Library!!!!
Please let me know if you want copies of anything and do let me know how you get on.
bye for now
