Catherine Ricketts Hi Barbara - I love this stuff - don't you? I was just hoping to see where you connected to the Sutherland's - still trying to figure that one out! Look forward to ongoing dialogue! Catherine

Leon Draper Hi Catherine, Leon Draper here, I'm nearly 74 and have just started this lark and find it wonderful to get back to our relatives. So far I have gone back(Through the Ricketts to
1690)and Rober DRAPER- Emma Jane Ricketts 1836
I remember Russ(Auckland Point) as an eight year old and those wonderfull boats in bottles etc now at the Auckland Institute of Technology. The love of the sea and boats must have been very strong as my two sons have followed the art of boatbuilding.Having been in builds of the last seven winners of the Sydney -Hobart . Americas Cup as shore boss for United Internet Team Germany and my youngest as shore crew and build for "Luna Rossa" and BMW Oracle(Holders) both were on the build of the last Volvo arround the world boat"PUMA" Would love to talk to you.I live in Pukekohe so please contact..Leon Draper

Catherine Ricketts Hello Leon, Nice to hear from you! I am not that far ahead of you in terms of research - I have only been doing this for a couple of years but quickly beacame addicted! I am a Ricketts by marriage, but have developed a great affinity for all branches of our dertermined and resiliant coloinial past - no matter how maligned under the current climate. (Slightly prevocative statement but I have children who are 7 and 8 generation NZers - a proud product of our settler forbears). I do have a connection with the sea - as you do - albeit not first hand. My paternal Grandfather, Knud Wilhelm Juliius Larsen, was a scowman. A Dane by birth who adapted here and established a late foot print by genealogical standards. Great to hear from you - I look forward to further email. Regards, Catherine

Jean Sutherland Hi Catherine, I have just read your answer to Leon. My Great Uncle, Amos Taylor was a sea captain and skippered the scow, Te Aroha for a few years. He was one of 16 children born to Charles Edward and Ellen Taylor, my Great Grandparents. Small world isn't it ? JEAN Mossman nee Sutherland.
