Brian Allen Hi Don,Thank you for your info.on Caragloose Farm . You have really captured my attention now. Perhaps we should swap details by becoming members of each others' site if you are agreeable. I am a member of the ALLEN FAMILY SITE thru Glenys Tumney [ nee Allen ] by virtue of our GG Grandfathers James & Charles [ mine ] who came to Australia from Shepton Mallet Somerset about 1850, I do have the exact dates as they came seperately. Initially for the Gold at Ballarat Gold fields, and my GGG/Father Charles moved a further 200 odd miles N.E. [ still in Victoria ] to another Gold mining area called Eldorado near Wangaratta the location is further on in this story , but eventually took up Farming. The old Homestead is still there & I have a cousin on part of the remaining land who is only doing token farming like fattening Cattle, as it is situated on a creek which rarely runs dry despite the area being hot and dry. My Grandfather & G/Mother grew Walnuts ,Almonds , Apricots ,Lemons , Apples & Vegetables , as well milking a dozen or so Cows and selling the Butter fat. It was a comfortable living however they were never rich , but certainly contented. Also perhaps the better income was from trapping wild Rabbits [ there were millions of them ] , so as well as eating them , they skinned them and sold the carcases for meat to a processor , while skins were dried and sold to Hat makers for Men's Felt hats. As you may guess I spent every childhood holiday there [ I lived in Melbourne which is 140 miles from Eldorado via Wangaratta which is on the main Rail line between Melbourne & Sydney.] I moved to Wangaratta in 1991 and had a small Business there until 1998, when we then moved again to another Country town Bendigo which was and still is a Gold mining area , being in what is called the Golden Triangle. Which means a very wide good area for Gold. Anyway I would very much like to swap stories with you and also find out where you come into the Wellington "dynasty" . My Grandmother had a lot of Cornish cooking habits obviously handed down from her Mother Louisa Wellington , and another interesting feature all the male members of our Family [ myself included ] were very versatile men who managed to do all types of work mainly with their hands , but none were real Professionals. .Perhaps the nearest I got to a Professional was a Sales Engineer , after an Apprenticeship in Fitting & Turning then obtaining a position with Australian arm of a British Comp Renold Chain.
Finally , do you have Internet on your Computor as it may be easier to contact each other that way. No problem tho as I can type on the Computor , mainly because I have always never been able to hand write in an acceptable way , although my Father's writing was what we call "Copperplate ' . Hopefully you will see your way clear to contact me, as I feel there is enough in our heritage to interest each other.Keep Well , Brian Allen
