Patricia NairnHi,
My grand fathers name was Harry Bertram Thompson (b- 1885 in Auck.NZ) and we think he did go to Australia after he left his wife Amelia (Cox) and his 2 children 1 being my father Darcy who would have only been a baby and Helen his sister who would be about 3 at the time.
I have heard that he remarried and has other children.
George Thompson and his wife Catherine (Mees(s)came to NZ from Staffordshire in 1858 just after they got married and lived in Auckland, they had 5 children, Louisa Thompson was Harry's mother.
This info may or maynot be of some help to you.
Good luck
