How do I use the online family tree editor?

The first thing that is important to know is that there is a difference between a family tree created in Family Tree Builder and a family tree created directly online.

For FTB trees, all changes should be made in FTB and then republished.

For online trees, all changes can be made directly from your family site.

To begin creating a family tree online start here if you are new to MyHeritage. If you already have a family site, go to Family Tree > Manage Trees > Add a family tree.

Let’s look at the main components of creating your family tree online.

Use the Help menu anytime you have a question about how to perform a certain action in the tree.

The List View on the left shows a list of all people in the tree. Click on anyone in the list to move directly to that person. Or use the search fields at the top of the list to search for a name in the tree. At the bottom left of the list, notice how many people are currently in the tree. This tree has 30 persons in it.

On the right, each person in the tree is represented by a Person Card. Men are represented by blue colored cards and women are represented by pink colored cards. Places to add new persons are represented with a

sign. Parents are always located above people you’ve already entered and children are always located below.

A person card shows several things about the person.

The person’s name. Women are displayed with maiden names.

Date of birth - Date of death.

Personal photo.

In order to add people, photos, or edit details about a person, click on the

+

sign on a Person Card. The following screen will appear:

This is the Edit Details window. Here you can add Name, Date of Birth/Death, Gender, Email Address and designate if the person is living or deceased.

This is the Person View. Here you can perform additional actions such as adding a photo or fact and deleting a person.

Use the icons in the top right corner of the online family tree editor to change to full screen, print, change settings or get help. Use the Proximity selector to show more or less people on the screen at one time. Click on the Home icon to return to the home person in your tree.
