How do I add adopted or step-children in Family Tree Builder?

In Family Tree Builder children are connected to a husband/wife family group. That means that when a new spouse is entered, the children of the former marriage stay with the former family group and are not shown as belonging to the family group which is made up of the new husband/wife.
In order to show all the children under one family group, use the “Attach Child” feature. This feature designates to which family a child is connected (not necessarily related) and therefore where she/he is displayed in the tree.

This feature is located in the “Family” section of a family group. Look for the narrow blue rectangle between the children and parents. This box contains all the info which is related to the family as a whole and not to one specific individual.

Click “Edit” > “Children” > “Attach Child”. A popup will appear listing all the members in your family tree. Select the name of the child you would like to “Attach”.

After you have selected the child you will get a “warning” asking you to designate the revised relationship of that child in the family tree. The options look like this:

a. Detach existing parents and attach new parents

b. Existing parents are adopting, new parents are biological (natural)

c. Existing parents are natural (biological) and new parents are adopting.

In most cases you would choose option C.
