Hi all, I've just started diving into my search and curious what people think of some of the paid sites. Ancestry.com seems to be the largest. Does it benefit to pay for one of these sites? Or, is it merely a tool to look up general census data and organize your search records? Appreciate any feedback.
Hi,, I've used Ancestry since 2004 and they seem to be the most comprehensive, although recently they changed the way of searching and have cut out the ability to search individual years in the Births, Deaths and Marriages section, which I find very frustrating because the transcribers they use are not always accurate. The good thing about Ancestry is that you can view as many records as you like; you are not paying per view. A lot of other sites are only pay per view sites or are very expensive to subscribe to.
Although I'm using this site, I haven't tried paying for it to use their search facilities, so I don't know how this site would compare. It is very good from the point of view of being able to enter a lot of information like Occupation, Will Proved, Burial, Etc.
What I do is pay Ancestry on a month by month basis because there will be times when you don't feel like researching your family tree. In this case you can cancel your subscription until you want to resume researching again.
Hi, if you need help with the search then you might want to try Genealogyfreelancers.com. Researchers make offers on your request and the bids are private so you can decide who might be right for your particular case. Good luck!!
I think it is worth it. It just depends on what you are looking for, sometimes the info. there is just what someone else has posted and may not be true. You can try Ancestry.com for a month and see if you like it.
