I am researching my husband's family tree. His grandmother Letitia Selina (MINNAAR) POOLE had a younger sister named Emily who married Pieter Johannes Steyn MASSYN; their children were Avis and Johan Fritz. I believe Avis was married to Beila Roy COTTRELL who died in Nov 1967; they had two children, a boy and a girl, Gilbert and Kim. I met Avis, her widowed father and her children in the mid-1970s, but left South Africa in 1979 and lost touch with them. I think she later remarried, but I don't know her current surname.
Fritz was a lawyer; I met him but don't remember how many children he had. Both Fritz and Avis lived in the Johannesburg area, perhaps in Kempton Park.
I've done extensive research and would hope that I could share it with both families. Also, I would like to locate any photos and other material on the MINNAAR family that Avis or Fritz may have inherited from their mother. My husband has few family photos.
My blog about my husband's parents' families can be found at:
www.quesnellpoolesouthafrica.wordpress.com The posting for May 2012 may be of particular interest in giving some of the background for my search for the parents of Hendrik Nicolaas MINNAAR, the earliest ancestor of that surname I've found.
It makes partial sense to me, but I can possibly share only a few interesting notes.
My great grandfather was Willem Jan Albert Steyn. (1863 - 1935). He had 5 children. ( One of which was my grandfather, the oldest). The person you may be interested in was his daughter Martha (Martie). I do not have her full particulars.
She was married to a Cottrell. His name I do not have. They had 4 sons. The following names, also not complete i.r.o. any additional firste names:
Beila, Eric, Bert (possibly Gilbert?), Douglas. As far as my memory is comcerned two of them occupied very senior positions with IBM or a similar business in the 1960's.
I met Doug and Bert in the 1970's at the funeral of their mother's sister Alice Roos (Steyn).
We resided at 144, Madeline Street Florida, for many years. A Mrs Massyn lived at no. 136. As a youngster I was not interested in genealogy. My mother told me that Mrs Massyn was somehow related to us. If my memory does not fail me she was called Avis.
I met Avis but it was not of any importance to me at the time.
My dad, Clement Steyn, according to me, must have been a cousin of hers. My dad passed away on 27 Feb. 1961 when I was 17 years old. I think that she moved into no. 136 after his death.
The name Pieter Johannes Steyn is a very important name for me. I am researching my great grandfather's info at present. All info I have of him is that he was married to a Martha Venter, who died -!895/6. He then married a Anna Sophia van Tonder.
I know he had a brother named Benjamin. I have a suspicion that Pieter Johannes Steyn could have been another brother.
From the above particulars, certain things do not make sense. Maybe with what you have we could try to sort this lot out!
Thank you so much for your reply to my query. I'll reply here rather than to your personal e-mail, in case anyone else is interested in the family.
According to Beila Roy COTTRELL's Death Notice, filed a couple of months after his Nov 1967 death, his parents were Gilbert COTTRELL (deceased) and Anna Martha COTTRELL (born STEYN) (alive). His occupation was listed as "Manager" which would be in line with your recollections. According to my calculations, your father Clement and Beila were cousins. As I stated originally, Beila was married to Avis MASSYN.
The Mrs. MASSYN who lived near you in Florida might have been Avis's mother Emily (born MINNAAR). If so, she was Beila's mother-in-law. Also, her husband outlived her so if you remember a widow MASSYN, it's not Emily.
I recently discovered that my husband has STEYN forebears. His gr-gr-grandparents were Philippus Andreas MINNAAR and Helena Dorothea STEYN. Her parents were Johannes Christoffel STEYN and Petronella Helena SCHOEMAN. From very preliminary research, I believe there are two different lines of STEYNs so you and my husband may not be related.
