I am searching for the parents of John B Carter, my great-great grandfather, born in Canada in January of 1856. There is a family story of John's mother being from a Blackfoot tribe. John immigrated to the US in 1880 and was married to Lemira (aka Elmira/Levina) Burroughs, also born in Canada. They had one documented child, Georgiena (Carter) Gerrior, born 1881 in Massachusetts (information from 1900 Census of Newton City).

Family lore tells of a son, John, who left home when Georgiena was 15 and was never heard from again. The son could have been from a previous marriage. No documentation has been found for his birth in the US and my great-great grandparents were married only 1 year prior to Georgiena's birth. 

I am having difficulty with the overwhelming number of John Carters born in Canada around this time. Also, the only information I have for Lemira is a headstone and stories from the family. Without even a province to begin, I am stuck. Any leads would be much appreciated.
