The more I research the more confusing it becomes, so here goes:

I know for sure that Sam W Moreland b. 15 Dec 1810 Jackson Co Tn, d.19 Dec 1817 Burnet Co Tx mar. Mary Pendleton Huges bet. 1845-1846 Jackson Co Tn, she died 3 Nov 1919 in Burnet Co Tx. They came from Tn to Tx in 1858

Sam’s parents were John and Eve (Eva) Spoon, and John’s father was William, mother  poss. Nancy Kimbrough

Here is where it starts to go wrong…

Chart of John Graves shows children of Thomas Kimbrough and Eleanor Graves to include Nancy Kimbrough mar. William Moreland, but no dates, it did show Thomas died abt 1777 in Caswell Co NC

Colonial America Moreland site under NC Morelands shows William Morland s/o John & Dorothy Morland b. ca 1729 York Co Va, d. 1816 Surry Co NC, “said to have married” Nancy Kimbrough and shows 3rd child John born ca. 1778

To add to the confusion add’l records show William b 1752 NC, d.1777 Surry Co NC mar Nancy Kimbrough b.1754 NC d.1817 Surry Co NC

Henry Turner b 25 Sept 1721 mar (Nancy) Ann Kimbrough d/o Thomas & Eleanor

Holt Family Tree has William b 1752 VA

Moreland Muster has William born ca 1729 York Co Va

Info taken from Genealogical Abstracts from reported Deaths, Obit in Christian Advocate Nashville Tenn states, John  Moreland son of William and Sarah Moreland (ok who is this Sarah?)b March 1, 1772 (how did they come by the date) died August 10, 1853 mar in Surry Co NC January 8, 1801 settled in Jackson Co ….it goes on to name his wife Eve Spoon, but DOB is different, on the same sheet it names Rev Jesse Moreland (now my family records given while some of those people were still alive states that Sam father had a brother named Luther Jesse or Jesse Luther)

Another site shows William born 1720 died 01 Dec 1798 mar to Sarah French b 20 Jan 1715 d 1 Dec 1798, but she would be too old to be John’s mother

I first thought that William had two wives, John & Joseph’s mother was Sarah and she died soon after John was born and he remarried Nancy, seems to be a false trail.

Just to recap I have John born 1772, 1777, 1778, William b ca 1729, 1752 &1720, William married to Sarah French and Nancy Kimbrough; Nancy Kimbrough mar to William Moreland and Henry Turner.

Can anyone help with the confusion John and William are giving me a headache!

You have mixed up several William Morelands.

William Moreland who was married to Nancy Kimbrough was born in 1752 and died in 1816. He was the son of John Moreland and Dorothy. His birthdate was determined from his marriage license. His date of death was determined from the date his will was probated.  He is listed in his father's will. This William was listed on a land transaction in 1806 Surry county NC as William Moreland Senior.

His son William Moreland Jr. bought 35 acres of land in Stokes County NC in 1783. William Jr. died in 1806. This is proven by a Land office record in Stokes County NC  which stated that the 35 acres of land that William bought in 1783 is being surveyed and entered into the county records by William's heirs.

The reason why this William Moreland Sr.s birthdate is listed as about 1729 is because 3 of his sisters actual birthdates were listed in the church records in Dinwiddie County VA. They were in 1726, 1728, and 1740.  People have assumed he was born with the older girls rather than later with his 2 brothers.

The William Moreland who's obit was in Tennessee is a different William.  The TN William was married to a Sarah. There is a debate on whether she is Sarah/Sally Simpson or if she is Sarah Baldwin Ford. This William was born in Hanover VA and died in 1812 Carter County TN. In a legal battle in 1813 Goochland TN over his share of his father's estate, he is mentioned as deceased and his wife and 6 children were listed as defendants. He has a son John Moreland who was born in 1772 and died in 1853. This son was married to Eve Spoon. This is the family line you are looking for.

This line goes in reverse (son, followed by father)

6 John Moreland 1772-1853 married to Eve Spoon in Surry Co NC. settled in Jackson Co TN

5. William Moreland b. bef 1757- d.1812 married to Sarah (Possibly Simpson).  Lived in Goochland VA to Washington Dist NC which became Carter Co. TN

4. Wright Moreland b 1727 d 1813  Goochland VA.  married to 1st Ann Wilson who died in 1782, than married Sarah/Sally Hancock.

3. Matthew Moreland b. 1598 died 1734 in York Co VA. Married to Ann Wright. she was born in 1700.

2 John Moreland b. bef 1644 and died in 1706. married to Ann Bell b. 1655 and died 1721. They lived in York County VA

1. Thomas Morland b. 1602 and died in 1664. born in England and arrived in James City VA colony on the Abigail as a bond servant to John Haney in 1621.  He was married when he arrived or shortly after arriving because his son Thomas was born in 1623.

I hope this helps.  The Kimbrough families all named daughters Nancy. So the Nancy that married a Moreland is not the same as the one marring Turner.

I have a complete outline of the colonial Morelands if you would like it, along with all my records on these Morelands.

You can email me at clayton2design@verizon.net and I will send them to you.
