Can anyone help me?

I am searching for any information on my 3x great grandfather.  His name was William Garrett AINSLIE, and it is believed that he was born on 1 April 1782, although this date may be out by a decade.  Family rumour always had his birthplace as Amsterdam, Holland, but another strong possibility is in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  Scotland or northern England are also outside possibilities.  The only thing that we know for sure is that he immigrated to America sometime between 1840 and 1850, and that he died in Cohasset, Massachusetts, USA on 19 April 1863.

I know that his family came from the British Isles, but I'm not 100% positive from where.  Grandma was told that they came from Scotland.  I have no information about his parents, so I have no idea where to start looking or how to verify this.

The family believe that he had a falling-out with his father and ran away from home as a teen and went to live with his Aunt Wilhennia or Wilhelmina in Amsterdam .  He alledgely joined the Dutch navy, but deserted.

He then, supposedly, fought as a member of the British Navy in the War of 1812.  He was definitely in Nova Scotia by 1815, where he met and married a lady by the name of Margaret POWERS.

Does any of this sound familiar to you?  Is he lurking in your family tree as a son or sibling to your relatives?  I am really desparate to find out any information about his parents and siblings.  If you can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to read this message.  I hope someone recognizes William's story.

Hiello,

I to am looking for the devil William Garrett Ainslie.  I notices on the marriage certificate that the spelling was different.

William Hensely and our ancestors were not as transparent as we would like them to be.  Maragaret Powers was 13 years old when they married.  I am not sure if she was born in Halifax Nova Scotia or Newfoundland.  I have found references to both.

I don't think that William Garrett was born in Holland at all.  Iam looking into all lines from that time period in Scotland and the border.
