Hi,

I am researching the McGrath name of Mitchelstown Cork.  So far I have got back to Michael McGrath and his wife Johanna Sheehy married in 1865.  They had a son John who is my great grandfather born in 1874 who moved to Manchester and was a GP.

During my search I have bought a number of other marriage certs for the 'Michael McGrath' to a variety of woma.  If you are interested let me know and I can forward you the details.

Hi, Michael,

I dont know if you've run across the name of my great grandmother Julia McGrath who married a Maloney..first name unknown..not sure if they were married in Ireland or in the USA..my grandmother's name was Mary E Maloney Darling..but I do know Julia was born in Ireland..probably like looking for a needle in a haystack. My guess is that she was born around 1839..Mary E. Maloney was born in 1865  in Quincy Illinois..so it's an estimate only..

I'd appreciate any help..that branch of the family ends with Julia..thanks..

I have a Patrick McGrath who emigrated to the US with his brother, Nicholas.  They had a sister, Mary, not known if Mary left Ireland or not.  Probably more siblings but their names unknown.  Patrick married Margaret McMahon between 1872 and 1876.  Patrick was considerably older than Margaret who was born in 1854.  Margaret was the daughter of Edward McMahon (born Monigan, Ireland) and Hannah Sullivan (born March 25, 1811, in Waterford, Ireland.)  They married in Quebec Canada and had 9 children.

Did your research discover any of these names?  How did you obtain marriage certificates?  I'm new to this.

Thank you!

Hi,

I haven't encountered those McGrath's in that village.  McGrath's are very common in that part of Cork and because of the lack of census for the whole of the 19th century (destroyed in fires!) it is almost impossible to track them down.

I knew the village my great grand father was from and then looked on www.brsgenealogy.com and found his birth cert, this site is not very easy to find the exact record and it takes a few attempts at 5 euros a pop!   It took me 9 attempts and 45 euros to find the marriage certificate for his parents.  You then need to confirm the details by buying a paper copy by filling in and posting an application form from here www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm

Post as many posts on loads of forums to find relatives who may have more info.  I use www.rootschat.com as it is free to be a member and the people there are really helpful.  A 3rd cousin of mine found me on rootschat in December and he has got a generation further back than me so that is really good.

You will find that other people researching McGrath's may have already bought certs that they don't need and will pass on to you.

Hope this helps

Good hunting

Paul

Paul - Thank you for your prompt reply.  I figured the McGrath name would be a very common one.  I will visit the websites you suggested and will start posting on forums as much as I can.

Good luck in your search for your family.  If I come across any McGraths from your area, I'll be sure to let you know.  Thanks again.

Kathy,

I am sure you'll discover from reading other peoples posts, post as much as you can with full names, dates of birth, village names etc... this will help other people to match to you as close as possible.

My GGF married Johanna Sheehy in Mitchelstown and I found that in a 16 year period in the mid 1800s over a dozen Michael McGraths married Johanna Sheehys in Cork alone.  Nightmare.

 Best of luck
