I am looking for descendants and ancestors of William J. Marks b.~1849 & Laura Lucinda (Taylor) Marks b.~1850.They were married Oct 25,1869, Van Buren Co., IA.Their children were Charles b.~1870, Anna b.~1872, Leonard b.~1875, Lena b.~1875, Lawrence b.1881, Jesse/James b.~1883, and Harvey b. unk. Lawrence is my grandfather who homesteaded in Oklahoma. Most children were born in Van Buren Co., IA. By 1895 Laura was left a widow found living in Ft. Madison, Lee Co., IA with some of her children and Anna Marks that is older, possibly an aunt, previous census has Anna with Henry Marks (uncle?).William J. Marks seemingly an orphan at the age of 8 was found living with Benjamin Walker in Washington Twn., Van Buren Co., Iowa. Benjamin’s daughters married McCune and Stevens gentlemen so these families may know ofWilliam’s background.
Laura Lucinda Taylor may be the daughter of John and Almeda/Elmeda Taylor with siblings of Elizabeth, Eliza, George Lee/LeRoy, Franklin, John, Monroe, and Zack. All siblings were born in Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa. If these names compare to your ancestors please contact me to share info. Family names that may be related or know info are Marks, Knotts, Rathvon, Rumbaugh, Kooken, McLaughlin, Matson, Taylor, Walker, McCune, Stevens, Graft, and Carter.
just found your message and not sure if you have your answers but i am a descendant as well. perhaps my father (same name) has given some. charles francis, the first born of laura lucinda taylor and william jesse marks, was my great grandfather. i have slightly different birth dates but know little else. i just acquired my father's files on all this so will explore them and offer whatever i have if you are interested. Murray Marks
Looks like your father and my grandfather are brothers? My grandfather is Richard F. Marks. There is another brother correct. It was so great, this summer, Richard got to go visit them. My dad is Dennis. I must say, I looked you up after 'Mari' said she saw your picture on the UofT website. Explains my interest in forensic science.
This is a link to my tree, but I don't have much only jonathan to William to Charles to Richard. I think the website will let you add more if you like.
I have been in contact with your father and some of our info agrees but some does not. As I understand it he believes that Jonathan Marks was William Jesse/Jessie Marks (WJM) but I wonder if it is a switch of father's names. Laura Lucinda Taylor Marks farther was John/ Jonathan Taylor proven by census info and I do not know William Jesse Marks father actually is. The first recorded history that I have of WJM is in an 1856 Iowa census at age 8 in the home of Benjamin Walker. WJM continued to live with the Walkers in different census until marrying Laura Lucinda Taylor. A Mary Marks is also found in census with the Carter family a near neighbor of Benjamin Walker. My guess is that both WJM and Mary Marks were orphans that the two families took in. One of the Walkers daughter's name was Frances. A connection to CFM's middle name? I always wondered who WJM and Mary Marks parents were.
Do you have anything that states WJM info besides family recollection info? I always wanted to to go to Van Buren County, Iowa to search for more info, but I still have gradeschoolers at home and do not have the time to make the trip. So far your dad and any other of your descendants have not been that interested in our info since it is not the same, but it is all based on recorded information. I have tried following siblings of CFM and WLM and believe I have found some, but not much.
One of my first cousins recently became very interested in our Marks heritage so it could be quite profitable to combine our searches and found out more. I have seen your picture on-line at U of __ and you have some simiilar family resemblences to the JMM descendant and also my first cousin, a WLM descendant. My immediate line has more of the lighter hair and skin. The very light blue eyes of CFM appear in my family, but not everyone. Your dad is very proud of you. Your dad has my e-mail address and I would send you again what I have sent him. I have a few leads to just possible family relatives but nothing concrete. A DNA test to just what background lurks in our past could prove interesting. Write again if you do find my address from your father. I do not like putting address on public sites unless needed. I think I shared with your dad a pic of CFM maybe as a teen and then one later in his life with his younger brothers.
Do you have a public tree on this site? It looks as if I am a decendant. My father is Murray Marks' cousin. I would love to see what you have and be able to give you some newer information. My grandfather is Murray Marks sr. bother.
Although I just have names of history, I would love to learn about the family history.
I have a family line that tells me that William Jessie Marks is my great great great grandfather and Jonathan Marks is is father. You can contact me at christienkayla at yahoo dot com
Your names and dates do not match exactly to anything that I have, but possibly we have a common ancestor since my William Jesse Marks oldest son Charles had a son named Neil Thomas Marks and another named William F. ( I think Francis) Marks.
According to other family I have met online since my post has William J Marks dying in 1884 which follows what I know from census info. My grandfather was born in 1881 and he had a younger brother born in 1883 so I know my William Jesse Marks died after that..
I do not have any info about William J. Marks except what I have gleaned from census and on-ine marriage records in Van Buren, Co., IA. My father recollects some family in Arizona so your post has peaked my interest. Please contact me at meadowood farm ok at yahoo dot com to compare more info.
