I have been working on a book about the Burtons of Orange Co VA (and Mercer CoKY and Randolph/Howard Co MO) for several years. Instead of publishing the book on paper(for now), I have a site at blogspot.com where I will be providing links to my Google Docs, where you can view my chapters as I download them. You can also leave comments on the blog. I hope this will become an active site for Orange Co VA Burton researchers. My site at blogspot is:
Not to my knowledge. Do you have any names from the 1700 or 1800's? My Burtons were in Kentucky by 1780 and in Missouri by 1820. Some of the Orange Co VA Burtons stayed in Virginia and did not move westward. I have not made an attempt to track this VA group past the early 1800's. I have spent all my time tracking my line through KY and MO into the 1900s.
I suggest you Google "Burtons of Patrick County, VA." Several listings will appear.
You can immediately verify the 1800's by selecting the Stuart Cemetary A-M. Burtons have been prominent in law and state legislative work in this area for many years. A goggle connection there should take you to the Patrick County Library/Historical Society or the Patrick County Genealogy Society. All would be helpful. I especially recommend the Genealogy Library (with very helpful research staff) at the Henry County (Blue Ridge Regional Library) Library, Bassett, VA. The entire library is devoted to history, especially local, regional, and Virginia. Good luck with your research.
Much of my family (not Burtons) also moved from this area to KY and MO, especially Poindexters and Fontaines.
