I was born in Guernsey Channel Islands. The name "GIRARD"" is a very well known surname there, and I always thought it was a Guernsey name. The Islands were originally French, therefore this name is possibly French. Don't know if this will help you at all. There is also a Guernsey name "Queripel", which makes me wonder if "Carufel" was originally a mis-pronunciation.
