I am researching the Froehlich Family who settled in Sullivan County, NY. I have many (but not all) of the present day family members on my tree. However, I can't seem to "get across the ocean." George Froehlich married Anna Maria Ebner around 1854 at St. Mary's Church in Obernburgh, Sullivan County, NY. Can't get back any farther than that. Denise Schneider
By checking with the church is a good start. But sometimes checking other sources such as registry office in regards to land or wherever deaths have to be logged other than the church might give clues. Because if George bought land it would have to be registered if I am not mistaken. Dont forget wht the possibility is of census records. Good Luck. Also, check into what the major points of entry were for immigrants at or prior to the time in question.
As for the name changes, that only happened after the immigrants came here due to the failure (sometimes) of a spoken 2nd language.
I wish I could help you with this. Unfortunately, I have Froelich's in my family as well. But mine came from Poland. I am not sure when they emigrated there. As for the ones that go back prior to 1860, I am not sure if they had any children that could have emigrated to the States. I know that my great grandfather had some siblings. Also he was born in 1865 and his father was born 1830.
I am willing to communicate further about any European connections you might have if you think there might be any to my family. Also, as far as I know, the family members that I have listed were from my grandfather's side and he did not come to Canada until the 1950's. Gerhard Jene
No matter what I do, I can't find when he came across. Church records say he came from Volkauh in bavaria, Germany. Census and deed records spell the name Froelich, Fraley, and some of your spellings. However, since this is a very small county (and I've returned to live here) I have been able to find most things about him once he was here. Are any of your Froehlichs from Sullivan County, NY?
Denise
