If you are still interested in the Cromptons of Westhoughton, I am currently doing my family tree. My maiden name is Crompton, and my relatives are fromn Westhoughton. I have a family tree on Ancestory.co.uk. If you forward your e mail address i can send you an invite to look at this. There is info and photographs. I have not been doing it for long but you are welcome to view what i have managed to find so far.
My Great Great Grandfather was a David Crompton. I've been trying for several years to find out exactly where and when he was born in Lancashire as well as the names of his parents.
He was transported as a convict to New South Wales in 1827 as a 16 year old for stealing a pair of clogs. His 1834 Certificate of Freedom indicates his Native Place was Horwich, and his Year of Birth 1811. His 1876 New South Wales Death Certificate indicates his father's name was David (this may or may not be factual).
When he married in 1834 his surname was recorded as "Crampton", and this is the spelling which survived.
A record on FamilySearch.org shows in 1805 a David Crompton married a Betty Holden in Bolton-Le Moors.
On 18 August, 1811, under England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975, there is a record of a male being baptised/christened in West Houghton (modern spelling Westhoughton). The mother's name was Betty Crompton. The Father's name is just recorded as "Crompton" (no first name), and the first name of the child is not recorded.
Do you by chance have any information about this male child, and especially what first name he was given?
