I am a grandaughter of John Colgan and Catherine Monks, my father was the second youngest in the family John. Sarah Kenny who replied her grandather Bernard is my uncle. You are researching John Colgan is there a family connection. We know Catherine Monks parents were Nicholas and Anne Monks, do you have names on this side going back further? On John Colgan b.1883 d.1956 do you know his mothers name, I think his father was John Colgan also.
He was married to Catherine Monks and they had 9 children together.
I have searched my births and marriages databases for all Colgans (all variants), which amount to ca 7,000 births and fewer marriages almost all in Ireland. I have found only one remotely similar:
Michael Colgan married Ann Monks on 10 April 1820 in St James RC Church, Dublin. Patrick McDonald and Ann Monks were the witnesses at the wedding. In my births database, I have two Monks mentions, in 1810 and 1834, one as a sponsor and the other the mother, but father is not a Colgan. Bridget Holligan was baptised in Kilcock etc parish, Co Kildare, in 1834; Christopher Monks and Mary Colgan were sponsors. Edward Colgan was one of the sponsors at the baptism of Mary Proctor at St Paul's RC, Arran Quay, Dublin, on 9 Dec 1810. The mother was Margaret Monks. JohnColgan@iol.ie
I forgot to mention, I am arranging to have a batch of Colgan (males) Y chromosome DNA tests done with family tree dna. If any Colgan males out there are interested, who can trace some of their genealogy, I would welcome contact. email@example.com
Now that you have mentioned The Naul, Co Dublin, I have quite a bit on this family in my chronology. He seems to be the husband of Catherine, the school principal for 44 years in the Naul. Lived at 'Church View'. Their son, Bernard, now ca 80, lives in an estate in Johnstown, Kill, near Naas, Co Kildare. I met him in his home some years ago. He has written his own story. Bernard is a widower. John died 31/8/1956 aged 73. I have other bits (111 Naul hits in my Colgan Chronology) in my chronology, and I could paste them into an email, but you haven't given me an email address. firstname.lastname@example.org
I am trying to gather information on a Bernard Colgan, my 2nd great Uncle, his brother Kiernan is my 2nd great grandfather. Bernard was born 1797 somewhere in Ireland. He had a wife named Ann. He owned property in Hoboken NJ which he bought in 1829 and when he died in 1845 the property was lost because he had no heirs and his brothers and sisters were not naturalized citizens.
