I'm a journalist and producer of a TV-program for danish national non-commercial broadcaster DR.
The program "Who do You think You are?" is helping danish celebreties looking back into their family-trees. One of our celebreties this season has a jewish family and ancestors in the middle-east.
Her grandfather is a jew, and he came to Israel from Cairo, Egypt in the late 1940s. Her grandmother came with her familly from Libya.
I'm looking for someone who might be able to help me looking for information about her great grandfathers/mothers from Egypt and Libya.
Her grandfathers name is Moshe Haim, he was born i Cairo, Egypt on november 6ht, 1930. I only have little information about his father - he was known as "el hendi" and was a merchant, but he is actuallly the one I need to know more about.
"El hendi"s real name was Eleyaho Haiim, he must have been born around 1900-1910. Apparently he was a weatlhy man, who held big parties for police-officers etc, to convince them to release his ships with goods and fabric from India (therefor the name "el hendi").
If anyone could help me with any information - where to seek, info/pictures of jewish life in Cairo in the beginning of 1900-1920 I would be most gratefull!
I am looking for the family of Jacob Rothstein. He was my grandmothers brother. Their parents were Esther and Rochmeal Rothstein. They ran a restaurant that fed Jewish soldiers in the Tzars army so that they could eat kosher food. They had several sisters, some of whom went to America, some of whom were killed by Hitler. They were separated by WW II and then found each other when they were 75. He was in Kiev, Russia. He wanted some religious books. My grandmother was a tailor and sewed them into the lining of a coat to send them to him.
When Russia let the Jews out Jacob and his family went to Israel. I think his son is a Dr. My Grandmother was Lena Yagodnick. She had 2 girls, Sylvia, my mother, and Bessie. I am Elaine and would love to find my family. My email is elainerub@centurylink.net. If this story sounds familiar to anyone, please have them contact me.
