I can't seem to find birth or marriage information about my great-grandfather Stephan Alt. Approx. birth Oct. 1817 in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany -- possibly Vogelsburg. Immigrated to USA in 1867, died in Carroll County, Illinois in 1873. Why can't I find birth information with his parents' names???
