Have you tried the US Federal Census?? They usually have a lot of info. If you know the town, sometimes the county, and the state you can pretty much locate people that way.. The census, are from early 1700 to 1930, and some state have census, this is of couse for the USA only..Hope this helps....

My maternal grandfather, Archie, was an older brother of Daniel McDonald. Their father, Archibald James was born in Lochmaddy NUist Scotland in March of 1820 not Goderich, Ontario as first believed. However, my grandfather, Archie, was born in Goderich, Ontario in 1869.
