SPEARS or SPEIRS, LAWSON ,ROBERTSON 1850s LKS,SCT.
I am seeking information about my grandfather John Spears who immigrated to the U.S. in 1872.
He was born about Jan.1,1853 (date uncertain) and lived near Glasgow or at least near the river according to questionable oral history.
He had a letter which was always described as important for some unknown reason. The letter is dated 5 January 1828 and addressed to Mrs. ALEXANDER LAWSON c/o Mr./Mrs. ROBERTSON, Tobago Street, Carlton, Glasgow, Scotland. It describes his voyage to New York and gives instructions on what his wife (Margaret) should pack
when she comes over on the ship CAMILLUS. We have no idea of his connection to these people, but ship arrival records show a Margaret Lawson and three children Jean, Margaret, and Alexander arrived in New York on 9-8-1828 on this ship. Believe this
may be the Alexander born to Alexander Lawson/Margaret Robertson Lawson on 4 July 1819 according to OPR. The letter also refers to Margaret's brother being on the same voyage and heading for New London. It also refers to an Andrew, who is to make
voyage on the Sam Robertson.
