I've been looking for James B Smith and found his marriage record, and he married Oma Ball in 1914, I think in Lewiston Idaho. I know he had two brothers, Clarence and Claude I believe. Can't find his family because I don't know if they came from England early on or not. I hear rumbles from a brother about Texas, but I never heard that from Grampa. If anyone has a hint or a lead, I would appreciate it so much. Thank You for reading this. Mike Mikeldeb@tctwest.net
Now that I have the time to spend, I would like to research my family roots. I know there are plenty of companies that provide genealogical information, some of whom advertise "free data" In most cases, the only FREE data after posting one's ancestor's name is "Yes, we have data on this person, now register (and pay) and we'll tell you". I don't mind subscribing to a service and paying for this info, but how do I know which of the many sites provide the most comprehensive data for the price of registering? To put it another way- who gives the most bang for the buck- birth, marriage/divorce, death records, etc.? I'd like to hear from folks who have genealogical research experience and compare their recommendations.
I have been working in genealogy for about eight years. I am trying to do about five different family trees. Ancestory.com is one of the best sites. But I will give you one tip. No matter what site you sign up with or go to - always understand that 90% of the time the information that is posted there is information that individuals have posted and believe that it is true. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isnt. Where are your ancestors from - what part of the country? If I know that I might be able to give you some ideas about where to start without having to sign up at a web site. Email me at email@example.com. Barbara
You can start in the local library where ancestry.com library edition is free. The library will help you get started. You get info about your family from the censuses. First of all collect every bit of info you can from your personal birth certificates etc. and take them along with you for reference. You need Full names, addresses etc if you've got them to make the search easier and quicker.
