Looking at the census records for state, your best bet would be to follow the Charles Williams in Sisseton line. Do you know any of your mother's siblings besides "Gussie?" Gussie was probably a nickname...perhaps for Gertrude, a sister on the census records. Other siblings listed as Wendel and Mary Jane Williams. Charles died post 1930 and it shows that his occupation was veterinarian in general practice. I would work on a death date and try and obtain an obituary to get further information. The mother, Grace, is listed as a librarian and also died post 1930, good chance there is an obituary out there for her. Charles is 12 years older than his wife Grace, so I would not count him out just because of his age when Helen was born.
I would also request a copy of your mother's birth certificate at http://doh.sd.gov/vitalrecords/order.aspx#Ordering. It costs $15 and a copy of your driver's license but it will provide your grandmother's maiden name which is immensely helpful.
I did locate a family tree with this information. I don't know if it is yours or if you have seen it but they have Charles Williams as the son of John Williams b. 9 April 1822 in Ohio, moved to Minnesota where he had a son Charles and then went to Iowa where he died in 25 May 1905. The mother is listed as Jane Burkhart born 1836. It was John's second wife. John is listed as a Veterinarian just as his son Charles is in later census records. It shows Charles living in Roberts County with Grace and the four above listed children from the 1920 and 1930 census. He and Grace were living in Waubay Ward, South Dakota in 1910 with their eldest daughter Mary Jane.
There are some good leads to follow to confirm if the census records from 1920/1930 in Sisseton are indeed your family.

Hello all, I am looking for any information on Coleman "Colby" Williams. He is the starting point for my Williams family.
He was born around 1790, was adopted by Stephen Hogg, married Cynthia Davis, and one of his children then married a Hogg. I need any info on his biological father.
I think his mother Sarah married Stephen Hogg however, the whole thing is confusing; some family files have Sarah as his sister and not his mother.???
I am just looking for more background, my mom's mom was a williams her brothers/sisters that I remember, my grandma's siblings that is were Cecil and Arthur there could have been more, but I know those for sure, and then the cousins and such would be Daniel Williams, Helen Williams turned Helen Daggert, and Earl Williams.
I am looking for information on Evin Harrison Williams born Dec 1831 in Alabama, USA and died about 1899 in Granbury, Hood, Texas, USA. Evin married Rebecca (Last Name Unknown) before 1857. Rebecca died between 1875 - 1880 in Laws Hill, Marshall, Mississippi, USA. Evin and Rebecca had at least seven children. If anyone has information on this family please let me know.
i am looking for any info concerning a Joseph Williams, born around 1913-14,his Fathers name was Henry Williams.
I believe that Joseph Williams may have been living in the John Haider building in Hereford and that his mother may have lived in one of the Alms houses on Castle pool street Hereford.
if any one can please help with any info would be most greatful.
our local council can not help as the building is owned privately by a Mrs Haider.I have found out several Williams's were living there one was a A Williams from 1959-63.
And another Lewis R Williams from 1984-85 but need to find from around 1990-2001? or maybe earlier than that do not have the exact time line but he was living there at some time,as other family members went to see him but too younger to remember.
Finding this out could help solve a very old family mystery.
i am going to have a look at the election roles next monday in Hereford.
I have asked our local council but because the building is owned privately i can not get any info on any tenants.the building is owned by a family company by a Mrs Haider.if i could find out if Joseph Williams lived there it could help solve a very old family mystery.
Unsure were else to look. i am going to try the election roles in Hereford next Monday,if that fails then i am unsure what to do next.
