Yes I received the information on Giles family. Did you receive the information I sent? Sorry for taken so long to get back with you. It has been quite a busy school year for our district.
Thanks. I have a picture of the general store in Avalon, Ms where Dr. Charles Caleb Mattox had a clinic upstairs. I am also trying to get information on a T.F. Lischman, not sure that is how you spell his last name. He was good friends with my grandmother and the Stubblefield family. I believe my uncle said people called him poor man lischman.
Yes, I did receive the material. Thanks so much. I spoke with my Dad the other day and he was so pleased to hear of our communication. Interestingly, he said that the family gossip was that Ethyl and Edgar Giles were poisoned by her sister. Of course, that was apparently not proven--just family gossip. Ethyl, Edgar, and my great grandmother Mary all died within just a few weeks of each other--all in Jackson. They are all buried in Lakewood Memorial Park. Edgar was Mary's brother. My Dad says that the Giles lived in a rather simple home in Avalon right on the main drag and that they probably were well to do. Though I lived in Greenwood for one year (1975-76) I never went out to Avalon. All the best.
I hope it is just family gossip. How terrible to be poisined by your own sister. Next time I am in Jackson for research I will pay my respects to the Giles family and visit their graves. My mother remember him as a nice man that took care of her when she had gotten her fingers cut ott. I have been down the mai drag in Avalon. They eventually tore down the general store that Mamie and George Stubblefield owned. We were able to get a picture of it. My mom said there were Choctaw Indians that lived around that area and would live out in the woods behind their house. Do you know any family names such as Stiglers, Ivory's or Hobbs?
I will look for the picture of the general store and send it to you.
I don't know any of those names in connection with Avalon or the Giles. Stigler is a name that connects to my Mother's family (Evelyn Newman Carroll). Her great grandfather was a doctor in Oklahoma Indian territory and his best friend was a Joseph Stigler. Most of the Giles are buried at Westville in Simpson County--but some of them are buried in Jackson (including my great grandmother Mary Elizabeth Giles Hardin). All the best.
I am researching the Mattox family from Carroll County, MS.
I am looking for photos of the mattox family. I was able to find the New Salem cemetary where most of the Mattox's are buried. Any information regarding Mary Virginia Mattox also known as (Mamie), would be greatly appreciated. She married George C. Stubblfield they had a general store in Avalon, MS. where her father Dr. Charles C. Mattox had a office upstairs. They were good friends with Dr. Edgar Giles. Mamie is believed to be my great-grandmother. When my mom was a little girl, Dr. Giles attended her when she had gotten 3 of her fingers cut-off. It was said that Mamie Stubblefield paid the bill. I know that her husband George died first they had moved to Greenwood, MS. I am wanting to locate and talk to someone that knew either the Mattox or Stubblefield familes. Also there was a gentleman that lived in the Avalon area they called "Poor Man Lischman" T.F. Lischman was his name. I would love to be able to see any old photo albums that the family had. Any help would be greatly appreciated
