joseph and margaret appear on the 1911 census as living in cheshire in a boarding house with their 7 year old son, we have been told by their son that they moved south ? plymouth? date. joseph would have been either a quatermaster or a master marniner by then and apparently went down with his ship circa 1917, his wife margaret is said to have died not long after, leaving thier son aged about 12 an orphan, who we think was brought up in a boarding school run by the jesuit preists in plymouth and during holidays boarded at a house in plymouth, joseph's father was william also a master mariner from groomsport ireland originally married ann chisholm mackay/mackey org from dublin in douglas i.o.m. settled in poulton, wallasey cheshire, where their children were born, i think william died in cheshire and his wife in denbigshire wales. if anyone out there can tell me where joseph and margaret fanny died and if there is a grave i would be very grateful
Looking for information regarding Robert Morgan, Immigrant to Salem 1636. What I know of Robert is that he is first seen in Salem 1636 when his name appears in the Salem Town Records for grant for 20 Acers of land. ( The Land Grants A of Salem, bearing the date 1636 Robert Morgan is listed for 20 acers of land (History of Salem, Massachusetts by Sidney Perley,Vol.1: 465).
We know from his birth to be in 1601, for he gave his age of 70 in 1671 during a deposition. (Essex County Quarterly ReportsName: Morgan, Robert Age: 70 Year: 1671 Vol:page: 4:332).
The Compendium Of American Genealogy : Vol. V ; Pg.363 "9- Robert Morgan (d 1672) From England in the "Fortune" to Plymouth, 1621. Founded first ch. at Beverly; m Margaret Norman (d 1692; Richard).; Vol: 4, pg. 412 Robert was Cooper by trade, came from Wales in 1636 Later marring Margaret Norman.; Vol:5, pg. 363; Robert Morgan came from England on the Ship Fortune 1621." but viewing the passenger list there is no Robert Morgan listed.
Researchers are listing Robert's parents are Thomas Morgan and Catherine Herbert, which may be possible, but not probable, fore I have a copy of Thomas' will written in 1624, (though written in the old language a relative I found was able to decipher some of it ) states "Now my will is that if my eldest sonne William Morgan shall satisfied ____ and paid or so to bee paid to my said youngest sonne Robert when he shall accomplish the age of one and twenty years the amount of two hundred and fifty pounds." I find it highly unlikely that Robert of Salem is the son of Thomas of Tredegar.
Other sources have Robert first in the Saco Valley Settlement with Richard Vines, then removed to Salem after a dispute, but searching the records of Saco and Biddiford,Biddiford Historical Society I am unable to confirm that theory.
Any information will be more than appriciated. Thank you
I was wondering if you have discovered any answers to Robert Morgan's birth, parents and arrival. I too have the same questions. I have not found any evidance of his arrival on the Fortune, there is a last name Morgan, but it is a Bennet.
I have found no evidence of where Robert came from or who his parents are. As you know people claim the he is Thomas and Catherine hebert's son, but I have a copy of thomas will written 15 1624, his son robert had not reached 21. the only clue i have found to date is the Topographical Dictionary of 2885 English Emirants to New England by Charles Banks, pg. 146 Robert Morgan sailed from the paris of Wrington, England to Salem , Massachusetts.
Sorry I can not be of more help. I think this issue may not ever get solved.
