About our family
Rasmus Hansen immigrated to NZ from Denmark and settled at Mauriceville West in the Wiararapa. Arrived in NZ on Board the "Reichstag"  on 6th August, 1874.  His future wife, Inger Kjestrup, was also on board.  Rasmus was naturalised on 28th November, 1893, his occupation given then as farmer, aged 50 years.  In "The Return of the Freeholders of New Zealand" October, 1882, Rasmus Peder Hansen, a Mauriceville labourer, owned in Wairarapa West County 64 acres worth two hundred pounds.
Harold Mortensen of Mauriceville recalled in 1977 that Rasmus was usually the last to get his milk to the dairy factory, but one day he got there before anyone else.  Without realising the humour of it, he said, "I'm first at last, before I was always behind".
Buried at Mauriceville 29th October, 1916.
Prio to Rasmus' death, the farm was leased to ? Harris.  Rasmus' son, Arthur wanted the farm but the Government bought it in 1919 and sold it to Arthur.
